The rest of the world is beginning to understand that it simply cannot use Clown World’s technology, no matter how alluring it might be.

France just banned Windows from 2.5 million government computers. The reason is terrifying. The US sanctioned the International Criminal Court. Microsoft locked the chief prosecutor out of his email overnight. One switch and an entire institution went dark. Europe realized any government running American software is one executive order away from losing access to its own data.

1/ What Happened

France ordered every ministry to ditch Windows, Teams, Zoom, and all American tech. 2.5 million computers moving to Linux. Denmark dumped Microsoft Office. Germany moved 30,000 PCs to Linux. All 27 EU members signed a digital sovereignty charter.

2/ Move Sensitive Email

Every email on Gmail or Outlook is subject to US law. Set up a free ProtonMail account. Based in Switzerland. Encrypted end to end. No US jurisdiction. Move medical, legal, and financial email there. Keep Gmail for newsletters.

3/ Move Sensitive Files

Google Drive and OneDrive are US companies. The CLOUD Act applies to everything stored on them. Move anything sensitive to a local drive, encrypted USB, or European cloud like Tresorit or Filen. Keep Google Drive for files you wouldn’t care if someone

4/ Encrypt Your Messages

iMessage and WhatsApp are US companies. Signal is end-to-end encrypted, open source, and stores nothing. Install Signal. Move sensitive conversations there. It only works when both sides use it.

5/ Replace Microsoft Office

Everything you type in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint passes through Microsoft’s servers. Download LibreOffice. Free. Open source. Works offline. Your documents stay on your machine. No cloud. No American servers.

6/ Lock Your Browser

Chrome is Google. Every search, every site, every tab reported back. Switch to Brave or Firefox. Both block trackers by default. Neither sends your browsing history to an American company.

The more you stay off the mainstream technology, the lower your level of risk. It’s one of the primary reasons we’re doing our own AI before it becomes completely corrupted.

If only George Santos and Bill Simmons had my parents, they wouldn’t be facing down a hailstorm of condemnation for circumventing the basic rules and regulations of dubious “prediction markets” and online gambling. Kalshi just banned the former congressman George Santos from its service and he was forced to pay back his winnings after he was accused of the dumb person’s version of insider trading. He bet on himself to not attend the State of the Union address, then conveniently didn’t go. For his trouble, he won (and will be forced to relinquish) more than $17,000; he’ll also have to pay more than $80,000 in total fines from Kalshi and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Bill Simmons, the sports commentator, podcast host, and founder of The Ringer, had a different story.

Intel scraps 44-year-old 'Fellow' title for top scientists, changes 'standard of technical leadership' — technical luminaries must now deliver measurable business results, combine deep expertise with strategic vision and 'measurable tactical progress'

Intel notified its employees last week that it would no longer title its top scientists, researchers, and developers as 'Fellows,' but will call them 'distinguished engineers,' a change that will not affect their compensation but which means a lot more than a simple formality. The new designation reflects the company's new 'standard of technical leadership' that combines deep expertise with strategic vision and 'measurable tactical progress,' reports OregonLive.

Under the new hierarchy, Fellows become Distinguished Engineers, while Senior Fellows become Senior Distinguished Engineers. Intel CTO Pushkar Ranade told employees that the move represents more than a simple renaming and establishes a new standard for technical leadership.

"The future of Intel will be determined by leaders who combine deep domain expertise with outstanding problem-solving ability, creative innovation with disciplined execution, and an expansive and strategic vision with measurable tactical progress," the Intel CTO reportedly wrote.

Interestingly, despite the fact that at least a dozen semiconductor companies — including AMD, ASML, Applied Materials, Arm, Broadcom, IBM, Nvidia, Micron, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, and TSMC — have Fellows, Ranade told Intel employees that the new titles are more consistent with terminology used elsewhere in the technology industry. While Apple, Google, IBM, and Microsoft have Distinguished Engineers, at Google, IBM, and Microsoft, Fellows are above Distinguished Engineers.

Intel established the Fellow title in 1980 to recognize employees with a sustained record of exceptional technical accomplishments. The designation had deliberately academic roots because scientific societies and then engineering organizations have long used 'Fellow' for distinguished members, for example, the Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) or IEEE Fellow. So, by the time semiconductor companies, such as IBM, TI, or Intel, were developing formal technical career ladders, Fellow already carried a very specific implication: an engineer recognized by their peers as one of the leading authorities in the field.

Across semiconductor companies, the Fellow rank typically carries compensation, resources, and influence equivalent to a vice president (VP) or senior vice president (SVP), so that top architects and device physicists can shape company strategy without moving into people management (yet, Fellows did not work alone for obvious reasons). It is unclear whether Distinguished Engineers will now have similar resources and influence as Intel's VPs and SVPs that report to the CEO. Furthermore, at Intel, the Fellow (or senior Fellow) title reflected Intel's position as a semiconductor research powerhouse as well as its emphasis on long-term technology development.

The most notable people to hold the Intel Fellow rank title include distinguished specialists in microprocessor architecture, process scaling, high-speed interconnects, and silicon physics, including Marcian 'Ted' Hoff (the inventor of the Intel 4004 processor), Justin Rattner (for his work on massively parallel supercomputers), Mark Bohr (for leading Intel process technology development and fundamental work on things like strained silicon, hafnium, high-K metal gate, FinFET, etc.), Yan Borodovsky (for leading development and adoption of optical lithography extensions, immersion 193nm ArF lithography, and multi-patterning, just to name a few), and Ajay Bhatt (for leading development of USB, AGP, and PCIe). Perhaps the most unexpected Intel Fellow is Boris Babayan, who is primarily known as the father of Soviet supercomputing and the creator of the Elbrus VLIW CPU architecture. He became an Intel Fellow focused on optimizing binary translation and advanced compilers in November 2004, months after joining Intel.

All in all, Fellows historically had a very specific organizational and status value at Intel, as in many cases they have been the key people to solve Intel's strategic and tactical technical challenges while not being in a formal management role. From now on, Intel wants its Distinguished Engineers to be accountable for business decisions and essentially become managers.

The biggest question about renaming Fellows to Distinguished Engineers is whether this is done in a bid to further flatten the organization (after all, Intel got rid of 250 VPs out of 450, according to Intel's CFO), or is it a deliberate move away from the old research lab model, where Fellow signified scientific stature and long-horizon research, toward engineers whose status depends on products, execution and measurable business impact. For now, we do not have any answers to this question.

Bitrig, An AI Development Assistant from SwiftUl Team Members

Four members of the SwiftUI team at Apple left the company, and now they’ve started a company that writes SwiftUI for you.

The product is Bitrig. You describe an app in plain English, and it generates real Swift and SwiftUI code. What comes out the other end is a project you can open in Xcode, read, and edit by hand. The pipeline runs all the way to TestFlight and the App Store, provisioning profiles and all.

It started as an iPhone-only app last October and now it’s on the Mac. I’ve only poked around the edges so far, but it seems like a good idea if you want some help with native app development.

I’m putting the Mac app on my machine this week to find out.

A few years ago, I worked hard to learn SwiftUI. Now, I feel like it's kinda pointless when AI can do it for everyone. Did I waste my effort? I hope not. Vibe coding is a great thing to get started but there's still lots of customization and tweaking to make an app do what you want, natively.

Bluesky Is Full of Anti-AI Zealots

Multiple people I know have told me that they love the idea of Bluesky, and want it to succeed, but have abandoned it for X because they use agentic tools in their work and find them incredibly useful, and feel that any mention of their usage here leads to hate and ridicule.

I wouldn’t bring this up if it was just one person, but it was multiple people since the beginning of August who mentioned in passing something to the effect of either “I’d spend more time on Bluesky if people weren’t so anti-AI” or “As much as I hate to be there all the useful AI talk is on X.” [...]

I’m not telling anyone what to do or what tech to use or what to like or not like. I’m just relaying that the reputation this place now has is one that a large segment of the population who are NOT fascists, saying they don’t feel comfortable here because a main area of their interest is considered worthy of being mocked and attacked. And even as I’ve explained that I’ve been able to have positive conversations about productive AI usage here with many of you, the reputation of the community here as insisting their own lived experience can’t possibly be real has driven them away.

It’s not just “the reputation”. That really is the culture of Bluesky. I’ve obviously written more about AI this month than usual — in particular, my two long pieces regarding watermarking LLM-generated text through word-choice diddling. I don’t really write much about AI generally.

Broadly, I’m making two arguments against text watermarking. First, that the embedding of a detectable signal (even if subtle) must necessarily degrade the quality of the generated prose (even if only slightly), and that this is an unacceptable trade-off for a feature that has no benefit to the user and in fact can only be used against the user. Second, that even if I’m wrong about the first part, and a clever enough watermarking scheme can embed a detectable signature without any degradation of prose quality, this is a bad idea and should be rejected.

Reaction to my takes on text watermarking have largely been about these two arguments. Some people agree with me that what watermarking proponents are claiming is not possible — the text quality must degrade. Others agree that while it must have an effect on text quality, it in fact is so subtle that it truly does not matter and even a careful reader will not notice an overall degradation. Others disagree, tell me I don’t understand the cleverness of the systems, and are convinced that somehow this watermarking truly embeds a detectable signal in prose without any degradation of text quality whatsoever. There’s a range of disagreement, but it’s all reasonable. Likewise on the broader question of whether it’s a good idea or not to even try to do this.

The reaction on Bluesky to my recent work is like nothing else. It’s largely in the vein that watermarking can’t possibly make AI-generated text worse because it’s already random gibberish, and that the only explanation for my being opposed to this is that I must be using AI to produce my own writing and I’m upset that my scheme will soon be detectable. Read the replies to this one; they speak for themselves.

I continue to think my friend Daniel Jalkut has espoused the one true take: “My take on AI is, essentially, everybody who’s against it is too against it and everybody who’s for it is too for it.” It is way less inflammatory to espouse an AI-skeptical stance on Twitter/X than it is to simply state that AI can be truly useful on Bluesky.

LLM-Based Social Engineering Scams

OpenAI disrupted a social engineering group from Cambodia that used ChatGPT. Its scope is impressive:

The network simultaneously conducted multiple types of scams, often blending elements from different schemes. For instance, operators used dating personas to build trust before introducing fraudulent investment opportunities involving cryptocurrencies and spot gold trading. Other users engaged in lengthy romantic conversations with targets using fictitious identities, posed as representatives of online gambling platforms offering fake bonuses and winnings, or impersonated law enforcement agencies to tell targets they needed to pay fines for committing serious criminal offenses.

Although the narratives varied, users across the network consistently displayed the same underlying pattern of deceptive behavior. For example, they created and operated fake dating profiles, fictitious investment experts, and fraudulent law enforcement personas. They also generated images of forged documents, including passports, legal notices, stock-purchase confirmations, and gambling platform interfaces.
